Custom Shoes in Montreal

When are custom shoes needed?

Custom shoes are the ultimate solution when prefabricated orthopedic footwear cannot accommodate a patient's specific needs. They are built entirely from the exact measurements of your foot, on a personalized last, accounting for every anatomical particularity.

This option is particularly relevant for people with severe foot deformities — those caused by advanced rheumatoid arthritis, complex post-surgical sequelae, partial foot amputations, congenital malformations, or severe diabetic neuropathies that require maximum protection. They are also suited to out-of-the-ordinary feet whose size or shape cannot be fitted with a regular shoe.

Our Manufacturing Process

Building a custom shoe at Marchildon follows a rigorous process that guarantees an optimal result:

1. Evaluation

Your orthotist assesses your gait and your limitations, as well as the shape of your feet, and determines the specific characteristics your shoe must have: type of support, materials, biomechanical corrections, and necessary protections.

2. Measurements

Precise three-dimensional impressions of your feet are taken using casting or digital scanning. Detailed measurements are recorded to ensure a perfect fit at every contact point.

3. Manufacturing

A unique last is built from your impressions. This last is the foundation for the shoe and is adjusted to integrate the prescribed corrections and accommodate the deformities identified during the evaluation.

4. Fitting

The shoe is assembled by specialized craftspeople. Intermediate fittings let us verify the adjustment and make corrections before finishing. The final fitting confirms comfort and therapeutic effectiveness.

Materials Used

Custom shoes are built from high-quality materials selected for your needs: soft leathers to reduce pressure points, seamless linings for sensitive feet, rigid or semi-rigid soles depending on the required corrections, and strategic reinforcements for durability.

We also offer aesthetic personalization — color, texture, and style options — so your shoes are as pleasant to wear as they are therapeutically effective.

Manufacturing Timeline

Building a complete pair of custom shoes typically takes about 8 weeks, including the fittings. CNESST, SAAQ, and most private insurers cover part or all of the cost, under certain conditions.

Our orthotists are members of the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ) and the Association des Orthésistes-Prothésistes du Québec (AOPQ).

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs custom shoes?

Custom shoes are indicated for people with severe foot deformities that cannot be accommodated by off-the-shelf orthopedic shoes. This includes congenital deformities, post-surgical sequelae, feet with partial amputations, advanced rheumatoid arthritis, certain severe neuropathies, and out-of-the-ordinary feet whose size or shape cannot be fitted with a regular shoe.

Do I need a prescription for custom shoes?

A prescription is not required to obtain custom shoes, but most public programs and private insurers require one for reimbursement. Our team will guide you through the process.

How is a pair of custom shoes made?

The process begins with a full assessment and precise impressions of your feet. A last (mold) is then manufactured to your exact measurements. Materials are selected based on your needs. The shoe is assembled, then adjusted during intermediate and final fittings to guarantee perfect comfort and support.

How long does manufacturing take?

Custom shoes generally take about 8 weeks to manufacture. This timeline includes impression-taking, last fabrication, shoe assembly and intermediate fittings. Modifications may be required after the first fitting, which can add a few days to the process.

Are custom shoes reimbursed?

Yes, custom shoes are eligible for reimbursement by CNESST, SAAQ and most private insurers, under certain conditions. The amount varies by program and condition. Our team supports you through the administrative steps.

How many appointments are needed?

Generally, 3 to 4 appointments are required: the initial assessment and impression-taking, an intermediate fitting to check the last, a fitting of the shoe during manufacturing, and final delivery with adjustments. Additional visits may be needed depending on case complexity.

Can the appearance of custom shoes be personalized?

Yes, as much as possible. We offer a selection of leathers, colours and styles so your shoes are not only functional but also attractive. Your orthotist will discuss available options during the initial consultation while making sure aesthetic choices do not compromise therapeutic function.

How long do custom shoes last?

With proper care, custom shoes typically last 2 to 3 years. Lifespan depends on intensity of use and maintenance. Repairs and resoling can extend their life. An annual follow-up with your orthotist is recommended to assess the condition of your shoes.
